DIAA Medals and Awards

Every year, the DIAA presents two medals to members who have made an outstanding contribution to the Association and the dairy industry in general. It also presents an award for scientific achievement and innovation.

It is named after Jack (John) Irwin Scarr, who's had a long and distinguished career in the dairy industry.

Nominations for the J. I. Scarr Gold Medal come from the DIAA State Divisions on a rotating basis, and are open only to DIAA members, with a minimum membership requirement of ten years. Candidates are not resticted to members of the nominating State Division. The recipient is then selected by the DIAA Awards Committee.

The award is named after John Harvey Bryant, a renowned dairy technologist.

Nominations for the John Bryant Award may be made by any DIAA Division or by the State Representative Council (SRC), for selection by the DIAA Awards Committee.

The candidates must have made an outstanding and sustained (at least 10 years) contribution to the dairy industry in Australia.

The contribution may be in any aspect of the industry, but must be marked by achievements and leadership which have resulted in industry advancements.

It is not mandatory for nominees to be members of the DIAA and/or to participate in DIAA activities,
but such involvement adds strength to a nomination.

Loftus-Hills Award

The Award is named after Geoffrey Dean Loftus-Hills, a talented scientist who worked to advance the dairy industry by introducing new products, improving manufacturing efficiency and quality.

The criteria for the Award are:
  • Published works in the field of dairy science and technology undertaken within Australia and in a form readily available to dairy technologists in Australia
  • Recognised performance in the introduction of new science or technology into the Australian dairy industry
  • The recipient must be a current member of the DIAA, having been a member for no less than three years

The Loftus-Hills Dairy Award can be awarded no more than once in any calendar year, and it need not be awarded every year.

A DIAA Awards Committee assesses the relative merits of the candidates nominated for this award and makes a recommendation to the State Representative Council (SRC) by 31 March each year. The Award is presented at the DIAA Awards of Excellence.
